Will 285/70R17 Tires Fit a Stock Jeep JK?

The Quick Answer (TL;DR)

Yes, but with slight modifications. A 285/70R17 tire will fit under a completely stock Jeep JK suspension. However, because it is wider than the factory tire, it will rub against your front sway bar at full steering lock, and it may lightly scrape the plastic front air dam. You will need wheel spacers or aftermarket wheels to clear the suspension.

What is a 285/70R17 Tire Mathematically?

Before understanding the rubbing issues, we need to translate the metric tire size into inches. The 285/70R17 is the most popular “33-inch” tire for the Wrangler JK because it is the largest size you can install without immediately purchasing a suspension lift.

Specification Stock JK Rubicon (255/75R17) The Upgrade (285/70R17) The Difference
Actual Height 32.1 inches 32.7 inches + 0.6 inches taller
Actual Width 10.0 inches 11.2 inches + 1.2 inches wider

As you can see, the height is barely a half-inch difference. The JK’s massive wheel wells can easily swallow that height. The real problem is the 11.2-inch width.

The Two Rubbing Zones on a Stock JK

If you mount a 285/70R17 tire onto your factory 17-inch Jeep wheels, you will experience rubbing in two specific areas when turning the steering wheel:

  • Zone 1: The Front Air Dam. Beneath your front bumper is a plastic air dam (splash guard). When you turn the wheel sharply, the outer edge of the new, wider tire will scrape against this plastic. The Fix: Take a utility knife or a Dremel tool and simply trim an inch off the corners of the plastic air dam. It takes 5 minutes and is completely unnoticeable.
  • Zone 2: The Front Sway Bar. Factory Jeep JK wheels have 6.25 inches of backspacing, which tucks the wheels deep under the fenders. Because the 285 is 1.2 inches wider, the inner sidewall of the tire will rub against the heavy steel front sway bar when you turn the steering wheel to full lock (like when parking).
Mechanic’s Blueprint: How to Fix the Sway Bar Rub To stop the tire from hitting the sway bar, you must physically push the wheel further out away from the vehicle. If you are keeping your factory wheels, high-quality 1.5-inch hub-centric wheel spacers are the optimal size for the JK configuration. They perfectly correct the factory backspacing and push the 11.2-inch tire out just enough to clear the sway bar completely, without pushing the tire aggressively past the fender flares.

What about Off-Roading and Flexing?

The “Yes, it fits” answer applies primarily to street driving and light trails. If you take your stock JK off-road and disconnect the front sway bar to fully articulate (flex) the suspension, a 285/70R17 tire will rub aggressively against the top of your factory fender flares.

If you plan to disconnect your sway bar on the trail with 33s, you must install a budget boost (leveling kit) or extended bump stops to prevent the tire from ripping your fender flares off.
