Jeep JK Code P0456: EVAP Small Leak (Causes & Fix)

P0456 on a Jeep JK

P0456 means the PCM detected a very small leak in the evaporative-emissions system.

What triggers P0456 on a Jeep JK

2007–2011: 3.8L EGH

The EVAP system is supposed to contain fuel vapour and allow the PCM to test whether that sealed system holds. P0456 is the result of that test failing by a small margin.

2012–2018: 3.6L Pentastar

The same meaning applies: the PCM has detected a small loss of EVAP system integrity.

That does not tell you where the leak is. It can be at the fuel-cap seal, a vapour line, a connection, a valve, the leak-detection hardware, or another sealed part of the system. EVAP hardware also differs across the JK run, so check what your year actually has before chasing a specific component.

Most common causes

A practical routing order, not a Jeep factory likelihood table:

  1. Fuel cap not sealing correctly, or a damaged sealing surface
  2. Small crack, split or loose connection in an EVAP vapour line
  3. Purge or vent valve not sealing as expected
  4. Leak-detection component or related plumbing fault
  5. Fuel tank, filler neck or vapour-system sealing problem
  6. Wiring or connector fault affecting an EVAP control component

A P0456 is not proof that the gas cap is bad. The cap is easy to suspect because it is part of the sealed system, but the code does not identify the leak location.

Related codes

If other EVAP codes are stored alongside P0456, keep them together. A companion purge, vent or circuit code narrows the problem far more than the small-leak code on its own.
