Jeep JK Drop Pitman Arm: Why You (Probably) Don’t Need One
If you are piecing together a lift kit for your Jeep Wrangler JK, you have likely seen “Drop Pitman Arms” listed as an upgrade. Historically, on older vehicles, lowering the pitman arm was standard practice when lifting. However, on the modern JK geometry, installing a drop pitman arm by itself is a massive mistake that will ruin your handling.
The Golden Rule of JK Steering Geometry
To understand why drop pitman arms cause problems, you must understand the relationship between your Front Track Bar and your Drag Link. Look under the front of your Jeep; these two heavy steel bars cross over each other.
The Golden Rule: The Track Bar and the Drag Link must be perfectly parallel to each other. If you draw an imaginary straight line between the mounting points of both bars, those lines should never intersect.
The Problem: Introducing “Bump Steer”
A drop pitman arm physically lowers the frame-side mounting point of the Drag Link. If you lower the drag link but leave the track bar in its factory location, the two bars are no longer parallel. They will swing on different arcs as the suspension compresses and extends.
- The Result (Bump Steer): When you hit a bump at highway speeds, the suspension compresses. Because the bars are fighting each other on different arcs, the axle is forced sideways, causing the steering wheel to aggressively jerk left or right without your input.
- Increased Stress: Drop pitman arms act as a longer lever against the steering box sector shaft. This increased leverage drastically accelerates wear on your steering box, leading to premature failure and steering slop.
What to do instead?
