How Do We Calculate Jeep RPM? (The Math)

RPM = (MPH ร— Gear Ratio ร— Transmission Ratio ร— 336) รท Tire Diameter
  • Gear Ratio: The ratio of teeth on your ring gear versus your pinion gear inside the axle (e.g., 4.56:1).
  • Transmission Ratio: The older 42RLE has a steep 0.69 overdrive, while the W5A580 has a 0.83 overdrive. This dictates highway RPM.
  • Tire Diameter: The actual measured height of your tire in inches. Larger tires travel further per revolution, artificially lowering engine RPM.

Tractive force at the tire is engine torque ร— total drive ratio รท tire radius. Because your engine's torque doesn't change, your mechanical advantage is simply gear ratio รท tire diameter. Dana 30 vs. Dana 44 Gear Ratio Limits

If you drive a Jeep Wrangler Sport or Sahara, you have a Dana 30 front axle. As you increase the numerical gear ratio, the pinion gear physically shrinks. 5.13 is the absolute physical limit for a Dana 30 axle. At 5.13, the pinion gear is incredibly small. Best Gears for 35-inch Tires: 3.6L vs. 3.8L

  • 2012-2018 JK (3.6L Pentastar): 4.56 gears are the undisputed sweet spot for daily driving, placing you right at 2,500 RPM at 70 MPH.
  • 2007-2011 JK (3.8L V6): The 42RLE transmission has a steep overdrive. If upgrading from stock 3.21 gears, 4.88 to 5.13 gears are recommended for 35s. If you already have 3.73+ gears, 5.13s may be overkill for daily driving.
  • 2018+ JL (3.6L/2.0T): The 8-speed automatic handles tires much better. 4.56 gears are perfect for 35s.

Best Gears for 37-inch Tires

For a daily-driven JK or JL on 37s, 4.88 gears provide the best balance of highway drivability and off-road capability. However, if your Jeep is a dedicated rock crawler, or if you live in mountainous terrain, 5.13 gears are the superior choice to recover lost low-end torque.

Critical: New Gear Break-In Procedure

Installing new ring and pinion gears is only half the battle. To prevent immediate catastrophic failure due to overheating, you must follow a strict break-in procedure. New gears generate excessive heat as microscopic imperfections mesh together.

  • 1 The First Drive: Drive exactly 15 to 20 miles under 50 MPH under light load (no heavy acceleration). Stop the vehicle.
  • 2 The Cool Down: Let the axles cool completely to ambient temperature (usually 45-60 minutes). This heat-cycling is what hardens the metal.
  • 3 The First 500 Miles: Avoid towing, high speeds over 65 MPH, and extended highway trips where you drive continuously for more than 45 minutes without stopping.
  • 4 The Oil Change: At exactly 500 miles, drain the differential fluid to remove the metal shavings generated during break-in, and refill with high-quality 80W-90 (or 75W-140 for towing).

What gears for 35 inch tires on a Jeep JK?
For a 2012-2018 Jeep JK with the 3.6L Pentastar engine, 4.56 gears are highly recommended for 35-inch tires. For the older 2007-2011 3.8L engine upgrading from 3.21 stock gears, 4.88 or 5.13 is recommended.
Are 4.10 factory Rubicon gears enough for 37s?
While you can bolt 37-inch tires to a Rubicon with 4.10 gears, it is severely under-geared. The transmission will constantly hunt for gears on the highway. Upgrading to 4.88 or 5.13 gears is necessary.
Do I need to recalibrate the speedometer after regearing?
Absolutely. On an automatic Jeep, the transmission control module relies on wheel speed sensors to determine shift points. If you don't update the computer (via JScan or ProCal), the Jeep will go into Limp Mode.
Can I run 35s with stock 3.21 gears?
It is highly discouraged. 3.21 gears are designed for lightweight 29-inch street tires. Putting heavy 35s on 3.21 gears will make the Jeep feel sluggish, stress the transmission, and destroy your fuel economy.
