Jeep JK Code P0138: O2 Sensor High Voltage (Causes & Fix)

P0138 on a Jeep JK

P0138 means the PCM is seeing a higher-than-expected voltage from the Bank 1 Sensor 2 oxygen-sensor circuit.

What triggers P0138 on a Jeep JK

2007–2011: 3.8L EGH

On the 3.8L JK, P0138 refers to the downstream oxygen-sensor circuit on Bank 1. The code describes the electrical signal the PCM is receiving. It does not identify the sensor itself as the failed part.

2012–2018: 3.6L Pentastar

The same definition applies to the 3.6L: the PCM sees the Bank 1 downstream oxygen-sensor signal higher than expected.

The code is about circuit behaviour. A high reading can come from the sensor, the wiring, a circuit fault, or an actual exhaust condition that changes what the sensor reports.

Most common causes

A routing order, not a factory probability ranking:

  1. Bank 1 Sensor 2 oxygen sensor producing an incorrect high signal
  2. Signal circuit shorted to voltage
  3. Wiring or connector damage near the downstream sensor
  4. Sensor ground or low-reference fault
  5. An exhaust or fuelling condition causing the sensor to report persistently rich
  6. PCM fault, after the sensor and circuit have been ruled out

P0138 does not mean “replace the rear O2 sensor”. The sensor is one part of the circuit the PCM is watching.

Related codes

If P0138 appears with mixture or misfire codes, keep the full scan together. One oxygen-sensor code by itself is not enough to decide whether the problem starts at the sensor, the wiring or somewhere upstream.
