Technical scope and sources
This reference is educational and covers common 2007–2018 Jeep Wrangler JK configurations. Exact torque values, capacities, fluid requirements, fasteners and service sequences can vary with model year, engine, axle, factory options and prior repair. Verify the exact vehicle and use the applicable factory service information before tightening a fastener or filling a component. The 2018 JK Owner’s Manual and Mopar’s maintenance schedule are starting points for 2018 operating and maintenance information; use matching documentation for other model years. Read the OffroadMe editorial standards for our source hierarchy.
Jeep JK Dana 30 Front Differential Fluid Capacity & Specs
The Dana 30 is the standard front axle assembly found on all non-Rubicon Jeep Wrangler JKs (Sport, Sahara, and X models). Using the correct gear oil weight is essential for protecting the ring and pinion gears. View our full Jeep JK Master Maintenance Database for more specifications.

Lubricant specification — confirmed against Jeep’s owner’s manuals
Jeep states the lubricant for the front axle in the Fluids, Lubricants and Genuine Parts table of the owner’s manual. The specification is unchanged across the whole 2007–2018 range — every model year checked:
| Use | Specification | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Normal service | MOPAR Gear & Axle Lubricant SAE 80W-90, API GL-5 (or equivalent) | 2008 Wrangler Owner’s Manual, p.426; 2012 Wrangler Owner’s Manual, p.561; 2016 Wrangler Owner’s Manual, p.662; 2017 Wrangler Owner’s Manual, p.437; 2018 Wrangler JK Owner Manual, p.438 |
| Trailer towing | SAE 75W-140 synthetic gear & axle lubricant | Same pages |
| Trac-Lok limited-slip | Jeep states these models require a friction-modifier additive | Same pages |
What the owner’s manual does and does not give. Jeep publishes the lubricant specification in the owner’s manual, and that is what the table above is sourced from — printed page numbers given so you can check it yourself. It does not publish a differential fluid capacity: in the 2014 User Guide the capacity column for both axles is printed as a dash. Any fill quantity on this page therefore rests on a lower-tier source than the specification does, and no suitable primary source for it was found in this review. Fill to the bottom of the fill plug hole with the vehicle level — the method that does not depend on knowing the quantity.
The rear axle is identified in Jeep’s own table as 226 RBI (Model 44).
